Thomas  H. Westhoff

 December 18, 1941 - December 11, 2010

Thomas H. Westhoff, age 68, of Millcreek, died on Saturday, December 11, 2010, at the Manchester Presbyterian Lodge. Tom was born in Dyersville, Iowa, on December 18, 1941, a son of the late Edmund and Freda Engleken Westhoff. Tom graduated from Xavier High School in Dyersville, where he met his future wife, Peggy Showalter, and from Iowa State University in 1964. He went on to become a chemical engineer with Calsicat Chemical for 38 years. Tom was active in the Erie County Emergency Management Team for many years and was instrumental in the development of the HAZMAT Response Team.

After retirement he enjoyed his time with the Gannon Small Business Development Center's SCORE, which provides advice to small businesses in the community. He also loved to read and do crossword puzzles in his spare time, and he was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs. However, most of all, he cherished any time that he could spend with his family, especially cheering for his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lavon, and two brothers, Jim and Ralph.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary "Peggy" Showalter Westhoff; his children, Thomas Jeffrey Westhoff (Jeanette) of Palatine, Ill., Ellen Murphey (Curtis) of Fairview, Amy Sokol (Eric) of Lower Burrell, Pa., and Kathryn Sementelli (Glendon) of Houston, Texas; and his grandchildren: Cassandra and Eric Sokol Jr. of Lower Burrell, Pa., Aidan, Corban, and Ned Murphey of Fairview, and Henry Sementelli of Houston, Texas.
Interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Prayer of St. Francis Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is error, the truth;
Where there is doubt, the faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled, as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

I had the pleasure of knowing Tom through SCORE. He was a good friend and a valued member of the team. My prayers go out to his family and its an honor to have him here at Life Ever After.

Tom Westhoff was my father.  I sincerely thank you for this website. I just found it.
Being able to access the memories of him is a blessing. As the one year anniversary of his passing approaches,  I found comfort in reading these posts.
He was a wonderful father and mentor to me.   I am so proud to read these remembrances.
I never knew the side of him that he gave to the community;  in my eyes, he was a devoted father and never truly knew his impact on the community.

Attended a Score Appreciation Luncheon at the Lake Shore Country Club. Tony Ciampa addressed the volunteers and thanked them for all their hard work.
He continued to say that the Executive Committee has agreed to award a volunteer or local person that has gone above and beyond helping SCORE with the Tom Westhoff Award. This award will be given yearly with the first award in 2012.
Miss you Tom

Peggy, Jeff, Ellen, Amy & Katy - my heart is sad I cannot be there to say good-bye to a very remarkable man and just hug each of you. Please know my childhood is filled with warmth holding onto so many fun memories of Erie, PA.
When I was little, coming to PA was a very happy time. Toby made my homesick days go away. He was a comfort to just stand by and smell his pipe.
My love for all of you is incredibly strong.

Words cannot explain my sadness for you loss. I love you all. I am blessed to have you all in my life and I will NEVER forget your dad.
One of the best things our dads did for us all was moving us to Chelsea Avenue. He was truly a man to admire.

Tom's leadership of the local SCORE program was been self-evident. He was responsible for leading a team of about 50 volunteers that assisted small businesses as far away as Venango, Mercer, Warren and Crawford Counties.
I feel saddened by his passing but also feel blessed that I knew such a man that was able to touch so many families. Weather it was a small farmer or a local emerging business group, Tom was there to offer a helping hand. He will be dearly missed by so many.
 My prayers go out to Tom's Family.

Tom was a great mentor to me when becoming the Athena Powerlink recipient in 2008. After getting to know him and his dedication to helping small business owners like myself, I was honored when he asked me to become part of the S.C.O.R.E. family.
Although I knew him a couple short years, the admiration I have for him is worth a lifetime! Tom will be sadly missed.

He sounds like he was an amazing man. I never knew him personally but through Amy I got a sense of him. I'm so sorry for your loss, but as I told Amy, he now knows all the beautiful secrets of heaven and is blessed to be dancing at the feet of Jesus. You've all been in my prayers and I'll continue to pray for peace, closure and a sense of comfort for each of you. I love you all!

The world is a little less special today now that Tom Westhoff is gone. He was a man who believed and lived that kind words, a gentle heart and integrity are the best guides a man can have. The love in the home of Tom and Peggy is shown by the three wonderful children they raised.
My Uncle Tom was an extraordinary man, a person I am lucky to have known, but sad that I was not able to know better.
Rest well, Uncle Tom. Please say hi to my Dad.
