“Fritz” Mitchell, 96, crossed over Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at Saint Mary’s Home at Asbury Ridge. Born in Meadville , he was the son of the late Peter E. and Meda Thomas Mitchell.
He was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School. Frits and his brother George were co-owners of Mitchell Advertising Agency, which operated for more than 30 years in Erie.
He served his apprenticeship in advertising as an employee of the Erie Daily Times and spent more than 18 years in the newspaper’s three advertising departments.
During World War II, Mitchell was a civilian volunteer to the labor force at Pearl Harbor Navy Yard, and later served as Associated Editor of the Pearl Harbor Bulletin. Fritz was prominently identified throughout his career with health and welfare organizations, as well as community groups.
He was President and a long-time board member of the Achievement Center; one of the founders and a board member of Camp Lend-A-.Hand; member of the Board of Corporators of Saint Vincent Health Center; an early member of the Executive Committee at United Way; advisor to the Gertrude A. Barber Center; Secretary and board member of the Children’s Welfare Association; Vice-President and board member at Pleasant Ridge Manor; President and board member of the Erie Advertising and Sales Club; Gannondale board member; and Mercyhurst College Associate Trustee.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church.
In retirement, he was a volunteer counselor with the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) for more than twenty years. He was a board member of the former University Club of Erie and a lifetime member of the Erie Maennerchor Club and the East Erie Turners.
 Fritz was the recipient of the Achievement Center’s Brace for an Ace award, the George Mead Distinguished Service award, the Easter Lily award of the Pennsylvania Easter Seal Society, SCORE’s Golden Member Award, as well as citations from Archbishop John Mark Gannon and Msgr. Ennis Connelly for services performed for the Catholic Diocese of Erie.

Fritz was preceded in death by a son, John Francis Mitchell, and a daughter, Rita Kathleen Mitchell; his first wife, Geraldine Sheehan Mitchell; his second wife, Helen Miller Mitchell; four brothers, George J., Joseph G., Charles A. and Eugene V. Mitchell; three sisters, Louise Mitchell, Marion Antoun, and Lucille Wittmann.

Surviving are two sons, Pete Mitchell, wife Gloria, of Erie, and Marc Mitchell, wife Betty, of New Freedom, Pa.; a daughter, Meda Lee, of Germantown, Md.; a brother, Jerome Mitchell, wife Helen, of Erie; two sisters, Elizabeth John, of New Bedford, Mass., and Dawn Levin, of Erie; five grandchildren, Peter Mitchell, wife Leslie, Daniel Mitchell, Stacey Leigh Wright, Kristen Mae Morrow, and Joel M. Mitchell; a step son, Douglas Miller, wife Jane; three step grandchildren, Stephanie Leigh Petruso, Anthony Paul Petruso, wife Carrie, Gerald G. Neely; four great-grandchildren, Peter and Andrew Mitchell, Meda Grace Wright and Brennen J. Morrow; sisters-in-law, Peg Mitchell and Mary Mitchell; and many nieces and nephews.
Fritz was laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery.

 


Gone but not forgotten.
Fritz  and his family will be in our thoughts and prayers as we go through our daily lives.
